Severe Weather – Get Ready – ABC TV

I talked to ABC TV National this morning about Cyclone Alfred and Disability Sector preparations as this system heads our way. Please share for important safety updates and stay safe. NDIS has resulted in thousands of new service providers and many new organisations that have never found themselves in a position to prepare and manage a severe weather event. Learn from those of us with decades of experience.

With cyclone Alfred heading towards Brisbane and populated areas in SE Qld, our Co-founder and National Disability Sector Advocate shared some tips and advice for all those providers and staff getting ready for some scary weather.

In essence

  • Consider Participants, Staff and the Organisations Response
  • Do Staff know plans?
  • Have everything charged
  • Have your contacts lists and trades people ready
  • Check on sites don’t wait for calls
  • Know flood zones
  • Most out earlier rather than later
  • Expect and plan for psychosocial supports and emotions
  • Stock up – PPE, Medications, Food
  • Updates local emergency services for your site details
  • Change rosters and avoid unnecessary travel and risk
  • Expect power outages
  • Use multiple lights sources
  • Have go bags ready now
  • Take chargers
  • Don’t forget essential equipment as well as people
  • Keep everything charged – power could go out any time
  • Talk to neighbors and find your local supports and informal networks
  • Assume emergency services will be busy
  • Did we mention – don’t forget to pack charger
